Cats and dogs……………..

No, I’m not making a comment about the weather (though I could be….) but about actual cats and dogs. This has partly to do with the fact that I came across a pair of Retievers last night, and in all fairness they are one of the nicest breed of dog that you would ever hope to meet. I will admit, I’ve never come across a Retiever that wasn’t happy to see you, they always seem friendly and are one of my all time favourite breeds of dog. I would seriously consider having a Retiever as a pet.

Which makes it quite funny that a lot of my friends appear to be cat people…… which I don’t understand. To me, cats always give the impression that they are putting up with you, at least until someone comes up with a can-opener that a paw can use….. They often come and go as they please and actively seem to look down on you.

Whereas dogs seem to love you. They want to be with you. If they can be in the same room as you they will be, they always seem to be happy to see you. What’s more, you can head out and go walking with them. You’ll always have a walking companion. They can be used to guard the house (though probably not the Retiever…. they’ll just be pleased to see the burguler) and are nice. I like dogs…. They are companions….

So why do people like cats……???

And for a giggle, The University of Glamorgan has started a degree course in Astrobiology or the search for alien life….. I kid thee not…….

Then I was sad……………

I got home fairly late yesterday (having been chattign to Strawberry on msn) and arrived home to find a Bible Study group about to start in our front room.

After being asked if I had a working CD player I was then asked if I could close the door if I was planning on watching tv as so not to disturb them……

I wasn’t asked if I would like to join them or anything like that. I was basically dismissed and asked to go away. Ignoring the irony of people about to discuss the Bible and the meaning of being Christian, I felt really quite hurt to be treated by two really good friends of mine in such a way.

So I went off to my room, made a couple calls and wrote a letter…… which is a good way to sulk!!!!

Then this morning I went into town to pick up some photographs only to discover that I have no idea who the people (or places) in the photos I was given are…… so that’s going to take another 3-4 days to sort out…… sigh…..

The power of music………….

There are many, many crazy things
That will keep me loving you,
And with your permission
May I list a few?

The way you wear your hat.
The way you sip your tea.
The memory of all that –
No, no – they can’t take that away from me.

The way your smile just beams.
The way you sing off-key.
The way you haunt my dreams.
No, no – they can’t take that away from me.

We may never, never meet again
On that bumpy road to love
Still I’ll always,
Always keep the memory of:

The way you hold your knife (do-do-do-do do-do).
The way we danced until three.
The way you’ve changed my life.
No, no – they can’t take that away from me.
No, they can’t take that away from me.

Frank Sinatra

I rediscovered my Sinatra CD’s while at work yesterday……. You know, there is always that joy of discovering something forgotten, it’s like bumping into an old friend that you’ve not realised that you’ve missed or eating out in a favourite resturant that you’ve not visited for ages…… All those memories come flooding and make you feel so happy.

What’s more, the power of Sinatra means that you do feel that almost anything is possibe. “Yes, I can do that….. of course I can…..” at least, while the music plays.

Fly me to the moon
Let me play among the stars
Let me see what spring is like
On a-Jupiter and Mars
In other words, hold my hand
In other words, baby, kiss me

Fill my heart with song
And let me sing for ever more
You are all I long for
All I worship and adore
In other words, please be true
In other words, I love you

solo sax

Fill my heart with song
Let me sing for ever more
You are all I long for
All I worship and adore
In other words, please be true
In other words, in other words
I love you

Sometimes it makes me cry……………….

In a school district, in Pennsylvania, parents are taking the School Board to court to protect the teaching of evolution in science class. This is opposed to the “Intelligent Design” that the School Board would rather have taught…..

Maybe it’s because I’m a scientist, but I just can’t see how either “Intelligent Design” nor “Creation Science” can be taught in science classes……

For something to be science, it has to be testable….. even Einstein’s Theory of Relativity has been tested. I know that the Theory of Evolution, on the grand scale, can’t be proven, but it fits all available facts, and evolution on a small scale is fact. However, ID or Creation do not fit the facts…. you can’t take the facts and come up with either theory…. you take the theory and squeeze the facts to try and fit, and that isn’t science.

I have often wondered how all these Creationists and ID’ists, who would like it pointed out to school children that Evolution is mearly a theory and unproven fact, how they would react if in Religious Education classes the children were told that God is only a theory. If all the Bibles (and other religious books) had to have “this is only a theory” sticker put on it.

Because (starting a sentance with ‘because’ there……) Faith isn’t taking all the facts and therefore seeing that there is a God and He exists….. Faith is the act of believing without the proof. With no evidence. When I look out of the window I do not see anything that I can point at and say “God made that!”

But I still believe.

Freshers…………………

I’ve only been on campus for thirty minutes and already want to kick all the new freshers around, as they get in my way…… that must be a new record!!!

But I suppose that I might miss them, afterall, I’ve gotten very used to the new intake of people every year…. and if things go to plan, this will be my last new intake…… before I head off to the big bad city……

Which is a tough choice….. Swansea, is by far and away the largest place I’ve ever lived in, and it’s been ok, but I’m not sure that I would really want to live anywhere that was bigger, or more city like… but, if you’ve got to go, you’ve got to go I suppose…… I’m sure I’ll make new friends out there……

Kids these days……….

Now, I’m not going to suggest that I’m on the olde side, but are kids getting that bit more computer literate that much earlier…..??? Take Wee Katie who despite being only a few days old, has set up her own webpage….. you can even email her!!! I didn’t have email till I got to Uni, I still don’t understand how my computer works….. I know it’s eight years old and so shouldn’t be working, and it won’t run anything new, but as long as it doesn’t stop working I shan’t complain.

And for those who might want to suggest that I’ve made up this entire post for the oportunity for people to be able to go Awwwww, how sweet…. well, what if I did….???? :p

Did you miss me……..???

Well, I got back last night (or this morning as it was 4.45am)…. having driven just under eight hundred and eighty miles, having cramps in both my legs, my right arm, a crick in my next, having caught a cold and cough and despite going to do some hiking, mearly getting soaked to the skin…… and all in three days!!!!

I had a great time!!!!

I will admit that I thought it was truely unfair that the one day that I spent in the Lakes was infact the worse day, weatherwise, there was. Low cloud, strong winds, rain…… The drive over was fine, even going over Wrynose and Hardknock passes it was sunny, but once on the mountain….. well Kat and I managed to get halfway up Sca Fell before we decided that turning back might be the best thing to do……. so we got soaked through, but it was still enjoyable, and getting off the mountain that much earlier ment that we got the message that Beany was able to meet us earlier than previously planned!!!

So we got to dry off in a pub, with a very well cooked meal (well done The Globe, Gosforth) and a general chit-chat to catch up with old times….. though I must remember the dangers of bringing two physists who both happen to be involved with the Brownies together….. far too much of the conversation centered on stuff I couldn’t contribute to!!! But all the same very enjoyable!!!

Popped into Carlisle, had lunch in Glenridding and arrived at ece’s place just in time to provide a spanner the right size to remove her car battery (as it had gone flat). Something to eat, many cups of tea and a long talk meant that I felt a tad guilty when I left her place at about 1.30, when she had to be up at 6.30 to get to work….. (I am sorry!!!!)

On the other hand, we did get to see the last episode of “No Sex Please, We’re Teenagers” which has proved very good, getting rid of the world’s largest (well, maybe second largest) spider from the bathroom.

So I enjoyed myself, though I’m in a fair amount of pain at the moment, as well as feeling a bit snotty…… I feel that I didn’t get that over well enough when Duracell called this afternoon, but it’s true!!!

I have also learnt that when planning on climbing even something like Englands highest hill, not really having anything to eat the day before means that you will run out of energy…… so back to my standard hiking breakfast of sausages, mash, beans and possibly bacon and eggs as well!!!

Also, congrats to Kat, who is a pround Auntie again…… to wee Katie, who was 7lbs’ish and born on Friday….. (will have more on this when Kat replies……)

What happens to…………………???

What happens to stuff when we’ve finished with them….??? I mean, take the archive system…… once you hit the button the pages fly off to somewhere….. I don’t know, I can’t find them… well, when I’m here I can’t find them….. I know that I sometimes get hits for posts that I’ve archived off, but what happens to them….

I’m wondering this as I was about to archive the next batch of stuff off when I realised that one post had some comments that I hadn’t seen before, as they were all made a few days after the original post. Bimble’s Comments all of which I find quite interesting…… I’m sure that Matty’s, Wood’s and Mike’s views are all very good, and they are allowed them, but hey, this is my little world and I shall cackle evilly if I want to!!!!

Mwhahahaha

But it then does this happen in the archives…. I go have a look and with in a few minutes I come across comments I never knew were there…….. and that’s only in one month….

Finding God………………

If you head down to the cinema you may get to see a trailer with someone on the catwalk, getting to the top of a mountain and scoring a goal in a cup final, all with the catchline, ‘Is there more to life than this?

The answer is an emphatic YES!! and can be found in your local Alpha Course. Of course, what’s interesting is the fact that it doesn’t appear to mention God, religion or church in any way……

This coincides with a poster campain by the CoE to be run in December depicting the infant Jesus as a revolutionary to intice young ones to the church before Christmas. The poster will send people towards the website www.rejesus.co.uk/ where they’d be advised on how to find their nearest church if interested.

I shall be quite interested to see how it pans out really…….
